La Fortuna lies at the base of Arenal Volcano, which rises over 1,600 meters high. Although it has been dormant since 2010, a major eruption is 1968 destroyed a nearby village.
Unfortunately, these are the only photos I could snag of a sloth. Sloths are only found in Central America.
We saw this beautiful crested currasow at the national park.
La Fortuna Waterfall is part of the Arenal Volcano National Park. This splendid waterfall is 70 meters high, crashing into a swimming hole below. We walked to the falls from our hotel outside the city, not realizing that we were in for a 7 mile uphill climb. Thankfully, we found a taxi to take us back to the hotel. It was especially overwhelming for Whit, who had seen this exact waterfall over a decade ago in 2008, while studying abroad in San Jose.
That evening we went for a swim in a nearby river heated by the volcano, forming a type of hot springs. It was a short, muddy hike to a smattering of pools bubbling forth with muscle relaxing goodness. We stayed until past dark.
And because, who doesn’t love a fabulous smoothie!
