Sucre is considered the most beautiful city in Bolivia. The colonial architecture and narrow streets are mesmerizing. Unfortunately due to protests in the area, we only had about 24 hours in Sucre, instead of the initial two full days planned.
Plaza 25 de Mayo is surrounded by beautiful colonial architecture. It also hosted a large protest while we were in Sucre. Currently, Bolivia is undergoing presidential elections and because the first cities’ ballot counts are in favor of the current president, who the country in general does not approve of, many cities across Bolivia are flaring up with protest for a true democracy. Fireworks boomed all night and people stormed the streets, fighting against any voter fraud. Near Plaza 25 de Mayo is the church where people rang the church bell so hard to signal independence, that the bell cracked.
Our first night in town, we walked up to a viewpoint overlooking the city for sunset.
We frequented a market and learned about the local chilis and fruits of the area.
A local favorite are saltenas, a sweet pastry dough filled with beef or chicken. They were delicious.
